The primary purpose of this blog is to create a space for professional reflection. For many people, journaling is a form of therapy, and teachers are just as much in need of therapy as anyone else (maybe more). I'd love to engage others in dialogue about education and language learning, but even if I write to myself, my goals will be accomplished.
A secondary purpose for this space is to celebrate students--their "aha moments," their silly sayings, their quirky personalities, and the insights they give me that make me love my job. I teach students in grades 5-8 in a United States public school. My students are between 10 and 14 years old, at a unique point in their lives when they are discovering who they are in relation to everything else in the world. Their stories are fascinating. Any students (or anyone at all, for that matter) will be referred to in complete anonymity. Any names used will be utterly fake.
My final thought on creating this blog is that it may be a door to my students outside the classroom. I often use Spanish in my personal life, and I'm always looking for ways to connect my passion for language with my students' own passions in life. With an upcoming trip to a Spanish-speaking country, this blog will temporarily transform itself into a travel blog as I attempt to document the experience for students.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on what I do here!
